Rogan Painting By Kansara Family
The Kansara family is among the very few families in India that continue to practice Rogan painting using its original materials and traditional working method. Based in Madhapar village near Bhuj, Kachchh, the family represents an uninterrupted lineage of Rogan artists.
Rogan painting is created by heating castor oil over several days until it thickens into a jelly-like medium. Natural mineral and vegetable pigments are then mixed into this oil. Designs are drawn using a 12-inch iron rod or wooden stick, flat at both ends, without touching the surface directly. The symmetry is achieved by folding the fabric while the paint is still wet, a defining characteristic of Rogan art.
